Having completed post-graduate studies in Romania and Austria, Laszlo Borbely’s political career has included many high-ranking posts in the Romanian Parliament and Government in the fields of international affairs, environment, sustainable development, regional development and infrastructure. From May 2010 to May 2011 he chaired the Commission of the United Nations on Sustainable Development, and between November 2010 and April 2012 he was a member of the European Ministerial Board for Environment and Health, co-chairing the board from May 2011. An ethnic Hungarian, between 1998 and 2015 he was executive president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania. He has also been a university lecturer in Cluj Napoca and Targu Mures. He has been awarded the Order of the Star of Romania (Knight) and the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic (Commander).
